Movie: The Exorcism of Emily Rose

Just back from watching The Exorcism of Emily Rose. It wasn't as scary as I initially expected, but I liked the theme at the courtroom battle a lot: Science vs Theology. This is certainly not your usual horror flick as the movie actually revolves around a courtroom drama and it has a clear message for its audience. The same certainly cannot be said for those scare-you-till-you-piss Japanese or Korean horrors.

The movie is based on a true story. "Based" means not a total recreation of the true story, keep that in mind. Out of curiousity, I quick-searched using Google and found this:
"The Exorcism of Emily Rose is ostensibly based on the story of Anneliese Michel, a German college student who believed she was possessed by multiple demons, including Lucifer, Nero, Judas Iscariot, and Adolf Hitler. In 1975, several years after Michel had started suffering from extreme seizures and exhibiting generally unexplained behavior (compulsions to self-mutilate and publicly urinate; the ability to speak languages Michel had never learned), the Catholic church gave her priest permission to perform an exorcism. Various traditional Church rituals were performed at least once a week for ten months, until, in July of 1976, Michel died of starvation (she had claimed for months that the demons would not allow her to eat). Anneliese’s parents, and the priest who officiated Michel’s exorcism, were brought to trial on charges of manslaughter..."

I won't go to write a full length review of this movie here. I'm more interested in providing an introduction. Movies, I believe, is best enjoyed if you knew little about them in the beginning. It's only then the joys of curiosity and satisfaction could be truly felt in the end.

I think this movie is certainly worth watching. If you're not convinced, watch the trailer.

i agree with your evaluation of the movie as not a typical horror flick but a faith vs science debate. and i believe that the strength of the movie lies in its ability to make one think really hard questions about one's beliefs (or faith, whatever that may be).

Yes. That's definitely its strength. But somehow this movie isn't very solid. It leaves a lot of things unanswered, lingering in the mind. Why did the devils possess Emily? Just because she's "hypersensitive" or she's a devout believer?

Liked your site, Noel~! Check it out: The Movie Fanatic

Maybe it isn't meant to be a horror movie... but there are certain scenes typical of horror movies that are meant to scare the audience.

I'm not too sure about the voices. You'll have to check that out. I'm sure you have the time. :P ... Share with me what you found.
